With the world still coming to terms with the new normal, there is great solace in familiarity. And what better way to beat the pandemic blues than to indulge in some good old Bollywood drama. We have curated a list of yesteryear classics that you can stream on the OTT platforms now. Take a look (you can thank us later).
Mughal-e-Azam, Amazon Prime Video
This cult classic needs no introduction. K Asif’s historical drama film that traces the love story between Mughal Prince Salim and court dancer Anarkali has given generations of romantics several moments to cherish. While the chemistry between Dilip Kumar and Madhubala is the stuff legends are made of, the songs inspired millions to fall in love. Watch it on Amazon Prime Video.
Sholay, Amazon Prime Video
Considered to be one of the greatest hits of Indian cinema, the Ramesh Sippy revenge drama had all the elements of a commercial potboiler. An avenging policeman, a menacing dacoit, a widow, a feisty and independent young woman, and two criminals. The film -- with a stellar cast of Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar, Hema Malini, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya and Amjad Khan -- would make for a lovely trip down memory lane with the family.
Amar Prem, Amazon Prime Video
Iconic songs, legendary actors and a powerful social commentary: Shakti Samanta’s Amar Prem gives you all this and more. Watch this film for the beautiful 'nameless' relationship between an unhappy man and a wronged woman. And who can forget the wise, “Kuch toh log kahenge, logon ka kaam hai kehna”, featuring Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore.
Gol Maal, Netflix
Hrishikesh Mukherji, considered to be one of the greatest storytellers of Indian cinema, surely had an ace up his sleeve with Gol Maal. Featuring the inimitable Utpal Dutt and the brilliant leading couple of Amol Palekar and Bindiya Goswami, this is a story of chaos, cheer and absolute mayhem. The film, which went on to inspire Rohit Shetty's 2012 hit 'Bol Bachchan', is available on Netflix and is a must-watch.
Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, Amazon Prime Video
Kundan Shah’s comedy film is a classic that is relevant even in today’s tumultuous times. Released in 1983, the film was a satirical take on the state of Indian politics, rampant corruption, and the state of the media; and even today, the film has the uncanny ability to hit the nail of the head when it comes to the problems that plague our country. Even if the politics don't interest you, watch the film for its stellar cast: Naseeruddin Shah, Ravi Baswani, Om Puri, Pankaj Kapur, Satish Shah, Satish Kaushik, Bhakti Barve and Neena Gupta and fearless humour, which is a rarity today. Available on Amazon Prime Video.
Amar Akbar Anthony, Netflix
Another gem from the Manmohan Desai treasure trove is the multi-starrer Amar Akbar Antony. With some evergreen music by Laxmikant-Pyarelal, some sleek one-liners, crackling chemistry among Vinod Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan, and Rishi Kapoor, and the perfect dose of humour this melodrama this film is the perfect pick-me-up flick you need amid a pandemic. It is available on Netflix.
Andaz Apna Apna, Netflix
A cult favourite from the 90’s, Andaz Apna Apna has inspired movies and merchandise in addition to leaving an indelible mark on pop culture. A film that tanked upon release at the box office, became a fan favourite with its TV telecasts and now OTT platforms. The story of two broke men, played by Aamir Khan and Salman Khan, trying to woo an heiress (is it Raveen Tandon or Karisma Kapoor?) is a laugh riot. And who can forget the stunning performances by Paresh Rawal and Shakti Kapoor? Catch it on Netflix now!
Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, Netflix
Before Shah Rukh Khan became the ultimate romantic hero with wide-open arms, he played an earnest young boy trying to woo a girl in love with someone else. The film that also features Suchitra Krishnamoorthi and Deepak Tijori, is considered to be one of Khan’s best performances. Watch it on Netflix.
Maine Pyaar Kiya, Amazon Prime Video
If you have ever said or heard, “Friendship mei no sorry, no thank you!” you should thank Sooraj Barjathiya. His debut, a romantic film that follows the love story of Prem (Salman Khan) and Suman (Bhagyashree) is a cult favourite. Though the conflict of the film was the age-old trope of rich boy - poor girl and opposition from family, the earnestness of the film was a winner with the audience. It is available on Amazon Prime Video.
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Amazon Prime Video
The iconic love story featuring Shah Rukh Khan’s Raj and Kajol’s Simran is a romantic favourite. The film that ran for 1,009 weeks uninterrupted in Mumbai’s Maratha Mandir is now available on Amazon Prime Video. So if you are mulling over movie choices for date night, this will have you covered.
